Convert HWPX to HWP

Turn an HWPX file back into HWP 5.0 without Hancom Office. Drop the file, press convert, and you get a .hwp that keeps the tables, pictures, shapes and headers. Then the engine reads that file back to confirm the page count still matches.

No upload

HWPX file to convert to HWP

Converted inside this browser, without Hancom Office. Your file is never uploaded.

  • Instead of sending your document to a server, the document engine is downloaded to your browser. Confidential documents never leave your device.
  • Tables, pictures, shapes, headers and footers carry over as they are. HWPX and HWP are two containers for the same document, so nothing is redrawn; only the container changes.
  • The finished HWP is read back by the engine to confirm the page count still matches the original. If it does not, the result says so.

How to convert HWPX to HWP

  1. 1

    Pick your HWPX file

Several at once is fine. A password box appears if the document needs one.

  2. 2

    Press convert

The document engine is downloaded once, then reused.

  3. 3

    Download the HWP

You get the page count, and a note if the check found a mismatch.

What carries over, and why convert back

What carries over

HWPX and HWP are two containers for the same document. One is zipped XML, the other is a Hancom binary, but the document model inside is the same. Nothing has to be redrawn the way it does for PDF; only the mapping between formats has to hold.

ElementCarried over
Text and paragraph formattingAs it was

Pictures and shapesAs they were
Headers, footers, page numbersAs they were

Document passwordIf the original had one, the result gets the same one

Why convert back to HWP

Korean public agencies are moving to the open HWPX format, but the receiving side does not always follow. Hangul releases from before 2010 cannot open HWPX at all, some submission forms are still fixed to the .hwp extension, and plenty of approval systems accept nothing else.

None of that is a reason to rebuild the document. Only the container needs to change.

The result is read back and checked

When the conversion finishes, the engine reads the HWP it has just written and compares the page count with the original. When something goes wrong in a format conversion, the page count is usually where it shows first.

If the engine reports elements it could not carry over, the count appears with the result. No note means nothing was reported lost.

Worth knowing

The output is HWP 5.0, which any Hangul from 2002 onwards can open. Files for the much older Hangul 97 or 3.0 cannot be produced.

We have not verified the result inside Hancom Office ourselves. For a submission or anything else that matters, open the file in Hangul once before deleting the original.

The other direction, HWP to HWPX, has its own tool.

Frequently asked questions

Do tables and pictures survive?+

Yes. HWPX and HWP hold the same document model in different containers, so tables, pictures, shapes and headers move across by mapping alone. Anything the engine cannot carry over is counted and shown.

What about password protected HWPX?+

It works. Drop the file, press convert, and a password box appears. The result is protected with the same password, so the protection does not quietly disappear.

It says the page count changed.+

That means reading the finished file back produced a different page count. You can still download it, but open it in Hangul and check before you rely on it.

Will it open in Hangul 2007?+

Yes. The output is HWP 5.0, readable by Hangul from 2002 onwards.

Is my file uploaded?+

No. Both the document engine and the HWP writer run inside your browser.
