HEIC has been the iPhone default since 2017. It holds the same quality in about half the space of a JPG, which is a clear win on a phone carrying thousands of photos.
The trouble starts once the photo leaves the phone. Windows Explorer, older versions of Word, government upload forms, Chrome and Firefox all fail to open it. Messaging apps quietly convert to JPG, but attach the file to an email or copy it over on a USB stick and it stays HEIC.
HEIC does not store a portrait photo as a portrait photo. It stores it on its side along with a note that says how far to turn it. A converter that ignores that note gives you a photo lying on its side.
This tool reads the note and applies it before saving. Wherever you open the file afterwards, it is the way up you shot it.

Usually, yes. HEIC is simply more efficient than JPG, so the same photo can come out close to twice the size. If that matters, run the result through the image compressor.
No. The photo is redrawn and saved fresh, so the capture data attached to the original is dropped. If you want to read it, check the file first with the metadata viewer.
Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose "Most Compatible". Photos you take after that are saved as JPG. The ones already on the phone stay HEIC, and that is what this tool is for.
