How to open HWP and HWPX files on a Mac

You double-click a .hwp file on your Mac and get a message that no application can open it. Before you set up Windows just for this, check what you actually need to do with the file. For most people, a browser is enough.

How-to

HWP and HWPX are documents from Hangul (한글), the Korean word processor made by Hancom. macOS does not know either format, and neither do Pages or Preview. What you should use depends on one question: do you only need to read it, do you need it to look exactly right, or do you have to change it and send it back?

1. When you only need to read it

The lightest option is to convert the document to PDF in your browser. Preview then opens it like any other PDF. The page layout, tables, pictures and page numbers carry over, and the text is real text, so you can search it or copy a paragraph into a translator. Hancom's fonts are swapped for free Korean fonts such as Nanum Gothic, so the letters look a little different, but lines and pages do not move.

Convert HWP or HWPX to PDF

Nothing is installed and the file is not uploaded. The first run downloads a document engine of about 8MB and the fonts, then later files start right away.

If all you want is the words, for example the deadline and address on a notice, the HWPX to text tool shows the body text with a copy button. It works on .hwpx files only. Tables lose their grid and pictures are left out.

2. When it has to look exactly right

Hancom's Hangul Viewer for Mac

Hancom publishes a free viewer on the Mac App Store (listed as 한컴오피스 한글 Viewer). It shows the document the way Hangul would, prints it, and can save a PDF. It cannot edit. For a long time it was the only official way to look at an HWP file on a Mac, and for reading and printing it is still the most accurate free choice.

Hancom Docs

Hancom's web office opens in the browser, so it works on a Mac without installing anything. You need a Hancom account, and the document is uploaded to Hancom's cloud. For a personal form or an internal company document, think about that first.

3. When you have to edit it

The EZPZ HWP editor

The HWP editor opens HWP and HWPX files in your Mac's browser and saves them back as HWP or HWPX, which is what most Korean offices want returned. The menus are in English and follow Hangul's own layout, so a Korean colleague's instructions ("go to Format, then Paragraph Shape") still make sense. The file is never uploaded.

Its limit is fonts. Hancom's fonts are not bundled. If a document uses a font that is installed on your Mac, the editor can detect and use it, which brings the layout closer to the original. Otherwise it uses free substitutes, and a slightly wider letter can push a line or a table cell. Reopen the saved file and check the page count before sending.

LibreOffice

The free LibreOffice for Mac can open HWP and HWPX with the H2Orestart extension, which also needs Java. You can read and edit, and export a PDF, but the extension saves only as ODT, not HWP. Simple documents come out well; dense forms with merged cells are where spacing tends to drift. Fine for a draft you only need to read and edit for yourself, not for a form that must go back as HWP.

Hancom Office for Mac, or Windows

If HWP files are part of your job, the reliable answer is Hangul itself. Hancom sells a Mac version, and its Personal plan includes Hancom Office for Windows and Mac. The other route is running Windows in a virtual machine such as Parallels and using Hangul inside it. Boot Camp is not available on Apple silicon Macs, so on those it has to be a virtual machine. It is more setup, but the layout is exactly what the sender sees.

HWP or HWPX: which is easier on a Mac

HWPX. Its structure is published, so more tools outside Hancom support it, and pulling the text out is straightforward because it is XML inside a ZIP. If the sender can choose, ask for HWPX or, better still for reading, a PDF. Note that older Hangul versions (2007 and earlier) cannot open HWPX, so if you send one to someone in Korea, check what they use.

What is HWPX, and how is it different from HWP?

The option people forget: ask for a PDF

If you only need to read the document, reply and ask the sender for a PDF. Most people will send one without a second thought. The HWP file only matters when you have to edit and return it.

In short

  • Read it: convert to PDF in your browser, nothing to install.
  • See it exactly as Hangul shows it, and print: Hancom's free viewer for Mac.
  • Fill it in and send it back as HWP: the HWP editor in your browser, or Hancom Docs with an account.
  • Edit for a draft only: LibreOffice with H2Orestart, which saves as ODT.
  • Work with HWP every week: Hancom Office for Mac, or Hangul in Windows.
  • And often fastest of all: ask for a PDF.

Common questions

Can Preview open .hwp files?
No. macOS does not know the Hangul formats, and changing the extension does not help. Convert the file to PDF first, and Preview will open that.
Will tables break in LibreOffice?
Simple tables usually hold. Documents with complex merged cells or shapes are where spacing drifts, and LibreOffice with H2Orestart saves only as ODT or PDF, not HWP.
Can I do this on an iPad?
Hancom Docs has an app on the App Store. The tools on this site run in the browser, but long forms are much easier to fill in on a computer.
Do I need Windows to send an HWP file back?
No. The HWP editor saves HWP and HWPX on a Mac. For a document where every line must match the original, though, Hangul itself (on Mac or Windows) is the safer choice.
Is EZPZ File made by Hancom?
No. EZPZ File is not affiliated with Hancom. HWP and HWPX are Hancom's formats; our tools are built separately on the open-source rhwp document engine.
