How to extract text from a Word file

  1. 1

    Choose a DOCX file

Word 2007 and later (.docx) is supported.

  2. 2

    Pick a format

Plain text to just read it; Markdown to move it into a blog or a document tool.

  3. 3

    Preview, copy or download

The result appears below, and the copy button puts it on your clipboard.

What the three formats give you

Plain text, Markdown and HTML

Plain text drops all formatting and keeps only the words. Lightest for skimming or searching.

Markdown carries headings, bold, italic, lists and links across as symbols. Convenient when moving into Notion, GitHub or a static blog, because the structure survives.

HTML carries the Word structure across as tags. Use it to paste into a web page or to process further with another tool.

What does not come across

Body text and basic formatting transfer well. Headers, footers and comments are always dropped, and shapes, equations and complex table formatting either do not survive or are dropped.

Images and footnotes depend on the format. Plain text drops both. Markdown and HTML collect the footnotes at the end and embed the images inside the output file, so a document with many pictures can give a large file. This tool is built for checking contents and moving text, so it does not reproduce how the document looks.

Common questions

What about older .doc files?+

Not supported. The old .doc is a completely different structure. Re-save it as .docx in Word or a free viewer first.

The result is empty.+

If the content is entirely images or shapes, there is no text to pull out. Those documents need OCR.

How do tables come out?+

In plain text the cells run together with line breaks; in HTML the table structure survives. Pick HTML if the table matters.

Is the document uploaded?+

No. The DOCX parser runs inside your browser, so internal documents are fine to drop in.
