How to turn a PDF into PNGs

  1. 1

    Choose a PDF

The page count is read from the file.

  2. 2

    Set the resolution

150 for putting on screen, 300 for anything that will be zoomed into.

  3. 3

    Download what you need

One PNG per page is produced.

When PNG is the right choice

Text and lines survive intact

PNG stores pixels exactly as they are, so the edges of letters and the thin rules in a table do not blur or pick up artefacts. On contracts, drawings and charts the difference is obvious.

The trade is that a page full of photographs comes out several times larger than the JPG. If size matters more, look at PDF to JPG.

The background is filled with white

PDF pages usually have no background colour set, so drawing them as-is leaves the background empty. White is laid down first and the page drawn over it, so the result matches what you see when you open the document.

Common questions

The PNG files are huge.+

Lowering the resolution shrinks them a lot; 150 DPI is often plenty for reading on screen. If they are still large, the document is probably photo-heavy, so consider JPG.

Can I get a transparent background?+

Not at the moment. Almost every PDF page is built assuming white paper, so making it transparent leaves the text floating on nothing.

How many pages can it handle?+

There is no page limit, but memory use scales with pages times resolution. Exporting 100 pages at 300 DPI in one go is heavy even on a computer.

Can I turn the text back into text?+

Not once it is an image. If you need the text, copy it from the original PDF or use a document tool.
