How to compress images

  1. 1

    Choose your images

    Add several at once.

  2. 2

    Set format and quality

JPG saves the most. Lower the quality slider for more savings and less detail.

  3. 3

    Check the result

Each file shows how much smaller it got.

How far to drop the quality

Around 80% is the comfortable spot

Dropping JPG quality from 100% to 80% often halves the file, and the difference is hard to spot on screen. Below about 60%, smooth areas like sky and skin start to show blotches.

Keep 90% or above for anything you will print; 70-80% is plenty for chat and the web.

If the original is smaller, the original wins

Recompressing an already well-compressed file can make it bigger. When that happens you get the original back with a note saying so. We will not grow a file in the name of compressing it.

If the size barely moves, resizing helps far more than compressing. Cutting the pixel count is the more fundamental lever.

Common questions

I compressed a PNG and almost nothing came off.+

PNG is lossless, so there is nothing to throw away. For a photograph, switching the format to JPG is far more effective.

Can I compress the same file repeatedly?+

Not recommended. JPG discards detail every pass, so repeats degrade visibly. Go from the original to the quality you want in one step.

Is the photo metadata kept?+

No. Redrawing through a canvas drops the EXIF. Location data goes with it, which is generally safer when sharing.

My transparent background disappeared.+

Compressing to JPG fills transparency with white. Choose PNG or WebP to keep it.
