HWP to HWPX

Convert an HWP document to the open HWPX format without Hancom Office. Drop the file, press convert, and you get a .hwpx that keeps the tables, pictures, shapes and headers. Then the engine reads that file back to confirm the page count still matches.

Files are opened inside this browser only. Nothing is sent anywhere.

  • Tables, pictures, shapes, headers and footers carry over as they are. The document moves into a different container, so nothing is redrawn.

How to convert HWP to HWPX

  1. 1

    Choose an HWP file

HWP 5.0 (the Korean word processor from 2002 onward) is supported.

  2. 2

    Press convert

The document engine is downloaded once, then reused.

  3. 3

    Check the result

You get the page count, plus a note if the check found a mismatch or if anything could not be carried over.

What carries over, and why HWPX

What carries over

HWP and HWPX are two containers for the same document. One is a Hancom binary, the other is zipped XML, but the document model inside is the same. Nothing has to be redrawn the way it does for PDF; only the mapping between formats has to hold.

Why convert at all

The Korean government is moving to the open HWPX format. Central ministries moved years ago and local government follows in 2026, so documents submitted to public bodies increasingly need to be HWPX.

HWPX is compressed XML, which means programs other than Hancom can read it. For anything you need to keep for a long time, an open format is the safer place to leave it.

Worth knowing

When the conversion finishes, the engine reads the HWPX it has just written and compares the page count with the original. When something goes wrong in a format conversion, the page count is usually where it shows first. If the engine reports elements it could not carry over, that count appears with the result too.

HWP 5.0 (2002 and later) and HWPX can be read. Older formats such as HWP 3.0 cannot.

We have not verified the result inside Hancom Office ourselves. For a submission or anything else that matters, open the file in Hangul once before deleting the original.

Common questions

Is the file uploaded?+

No. Both the HWP parser and the HWPX writer run inside your browser, so confidential official documents are fine to drop in.

What about password-protected HWP?+

It cannot be read. Remove the password in the Korean word processor and try again.

Does it handle very old HWP files?+

Only HWP 5.0 (2002 onward). The older HWP 3.0 cannot be read.

Will the result open in Hancom Office?+

It is written as standard OWPML, and the engine reads the finished file back to confirm the page count. We have not verified how Hancom Office itself handles it, so for important documents open the result before deleting the original.

Do tables and pictures survive?+

Yes. HWP and HWPX hold the same document model in different containers, so tables, pictures, shapes and headers move across by mapping alone. Anything the engine cannot carry over is counted and shown.
