Remove background

Keep the person or object and drop everything behind it. Your photo never leaves this browser.

Photos to cut out

JPG · PNG · WebP · HEIC. Photos open inside this browser and are never uploaded.

  • The first photo downloads a ~4.6MB model. Every photo after that starts right away.
  • The model comes to your photo instead of your photo going to a server. Nothing leaves this device.
  • Works well on people, products and pets with a clear outline. If hair or fur looks rough, run it again in HD and touch up the rest with the brush.
  • PNG and WebP keep transparency. JPG cannot, so it is saved on white unless you pick a background.

How to remove a background

  1. 1

    Choose your photos

Drop in JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC photos, as many as you like. Each one is cut out as soon as it arrives.

  2. 2

    Check and touch up

Drag the slider to compare with the original. If hair or fur looks rough, redo it in HD, then paint over anything left with the erase or restore brush.

  3. 3

    Pick a background and save

Keep it transparent or use white, a colour or your own photo. Save as PNG, WebP or JPG at the original size, or all at once as a ZIP.

Cut out without uploading

The model travels, not your photo

Almost every background remover sends your image to a server. Pictures of faces, unreleased product shots, scans of documents: all of them pass through somebody else’s storage first.

This tool works the other way round. Instead of sending your photo to the model, it downloads the model to your photo. The fast model is about 4.6MB. The HD model is 47MB and is only downloaded when you ask for it. After that it keeps working even with the network switched off.

Fast first, HD when it matters

Every photo is first cut out by a small model that looks at it at 320 pixels. That takes a second or two and is enough for products and portraits on a plain background.

When hair, fur or whiskers come out rough, Redo in HD runs a larger model that looks at 1024 pixels. It takes longer, often more than 10 seconds per photo on a laptop, but fine strands survive. You can switch between the two results at any time.

What it handles well, and what it does not

It is strong when the subject stands clearly apart from the background: profile pictures, product shots on a plain surface, pets.

It still struggles with glass, smoke and see-through fabric, and edges soften when the background is a similar colour to the subject. The brush fixes small misses. For advertising-grade compositing you still want a dedicated editor.

Common questions

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?+

No. The model is downloaded into your browser and the work happens on your device. The image never goes over the network.

Why is the first one slow?+

The first run fetches a ~4.6MB model. Your browser keeps it, so every photo after that finishes in a second or two. HD downloads a separate 47MB model the first time you use it.

Is there a watermark?+

No watermark. Results are saved at the original size, up to 4096 pixels on the long side.

The hair edges look soft.+

Press Redo in HD. It looks at the photo at 1024 pixels instead of 320, so fine strands survive. Anything still left over can be erased or brought back with the brush.

Which format should I save as?+

PNG or WebP if you need transparency. WebP files are smaller. JPG cannot hold transparency, so it is saved on white unless you pick a background.
