HWP and HWPX are not the same thing

Why only HWPX

HWPX is an open format (compressed XML) with a published structure, so a browser can open and read it.

The older HWP (5.0) is an undocumented binary format. If you have the Korean word processor, use "Save As" and pick HWPX, then try again.

Korean public documents are moving to HWPX

The Korean government is migrating its document format to the open HWPX. Central ministries moved years ago, and with local government following in 2026, files arriving from public bodies are increasingly HWPX.

Part of the point of that change is that the contents should be readable without Hancom Office installed.

Common questions

Does it include table contents?+

Yes, though without the table structure. The cell contents run together in order. If the table layout matters, use the Hancom viewer.

The result is empty.+

The document may be made entirely of images. It is also possible the extension says .hwpx but the file is something else.

What about formatting and images?+

This tool extracts text only. Fonts, alignment and images do not come across.

Is it safe for official documents?+

The file is never transmitted, so confidential documents are fine. The archive is unpacked and the XML read inside your browser.
