How to turn a PDF into a CAD file
- 1
Add the PDF
Works best with drawings saved to PDF from a CAD program. Several pages are fine.
- 2
Pick the scale
Choose the scale printed on the drawing, such as 1/100, to get real sizes in mm. If unsure, keep Paper.
- 3
Download the DXF
You get one DXF per page. Open it in AutoCAD and use Save As › DWG if you need DWG.
What comes across and what does not
What comes across
Lines and curves keep their position and size; curves are split into short straight lines. Dashed lines keep their pattern, and text stays editable text with its size and rotation. Lines of different colours go to separate layers.
What does not
Layer names, dimensions and blocks are lost when a drawing is printed to PDF, so they cannot be rebuilt. A scanned paper drawing is a picture, not lines, so there is nothing to convert.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get DWG directly?+
For now you get DXF, which AutoCAD opens as is; choose DWG in Save As. Direct DWG output is on the way.
Are the sizes real?+
Pick the scale and they are: on a 1/100 drawing, 1 mm on paper becomes 100 mm. Paper keeps the size on the PDF page in mm.
Is the file sent to a server?+
No, everything happens in your browser.
