About EMLX files

Where .emlx files live

The Mail app on a Mac saves each email as its own .emlx file inside the Mail folder in your user Library. You never see them day to day, but they turn up when you pull mail out of a Time Machine backup or connect an old Mac's drive to another computer.

An .emlx is a standard email (.eml) with a little extra Mail app data around it, so simply renaming it to .eml does not always work. This viewer strips that extra data and reads the email.

When attachments are missing

A file ending in .partial.emlx is one where Mail stored the attachments separately. On its own it may be missing them. The body and headers still read normally.

Many at once

Drop a batch of .emlx files from a Mail folder and they appear as a list. Search by sender, date range or body text, group by conversation, merge into one PDF or export each one as .eml. There is no limit on the number of emails.

To move a whole mailbox, you can also use "Export Mailbox" in Mail to make an .mbox. That file opens on the "Open MBOX file" page.
