Decide whether to include the header (From, To, date), the attachment list and images. PDF attachments can be appended after the body.

  3. 3

    Save as PDF

Press "Save as PDF" and the file downloads. With several emails, merge them into one PDF or get one PDF per email in a ZIP.

Good to know when converting MSG to PDF

No print dialog

The usual way to turn an email into a PDF is to open it in Outlook, press Print and pick a PDF printer. That needs Outlook installed, and with many emails you repeat it one message at a time.

Here, "Save as PDF" builds the PDF file directly. The body goes in as real text rather than a picture of text, so you can search and copy it inside the PDF later.

Converting a batch

Litigation, audits and HR cases often call for dozens of emails as PDFs. Drop all the .msg files together, pick the messages you need from the list (or all of them), then choose how to save.

"Merge into one PDF" puts the selected emails into a single PDF, one after another. "One PDF per email" makes a separate PDF for each message and bundles them in a ZIP, named by date and subject, like "2024-03-15 Re quote.pdf". Because the date comes first, sorting the folder by name also sorts it by time.

You can narrow the list first by sender, recipient, date range, attachment name or body text, and save only what matches.

What happens to attachments

With the attachment list turned on, the PDF names every attachment. With PDF appending turned on, the pages of each PDF attachment follow the email body, which is handy for keeping a quote or contract together with the email it came in.

Other attachments such as Word or Excel files are not placed inside the PDF. Save those one by one or all at once as a ZIP.

Where .msg files come from

In Outlook for Windows, dragging an email onto the desktop or into a folder creates a .msg file, and "Save As" uses .msg by default. That is why emails handed over as evidence or records so often arrive as .msg.

On a computer without Outlook, on a Mac or on a phone, there is usually nothing that opens them. Here a browser is all it takes to open one and turn it into a PDF.

Common questions

Do I need Outlook?+

No. Reading the .msg and building the PDF both happen inside your browser. Nothing to install.

Is the email sent to a server?+

No. The file never leaves your device and the conversion finishes in this browser, so work email and legal material stay with you.

Does a print dialog open?+

No. "Save as PDF" downloads a PDF file directly. There is no printer to pick and no margins to adjust.

Can I search and copy text in the PDF?+

Yes. The body is written as text, not as an image, so any PDF reader can search it and copy from it.

Can I combine several .msg files into one PDF?+

Yes. Drop them together, select the emails and choose "Merge into one PDF". For a separate PDF per email, choose the ZIP option instead. Files are named "YYYY-MM-DD Subject.pdf".

Are images in the body included?+

Turn on "Include images" and pictures carried inside the email go into the PDF. Images loaded from outside servers can be tracking pixels, so they are blocked by default.

The characters come out wrong.+

The viewer reads the code page stored in the .msg to pick the right characters. If an older message still looks garbled, choose an encoding yourself from the encoding menu.

Can I convert emails from a PST file?+

Yes. Open the PST on the "Open PST file" page, pick the emails, and save them as PDF the same way.
