8 free PDF editors ranked: how much do they actually edit?

That difference is the whole article. Changing the original text and laying new text over it are not the same thing. Both are sold as "edit PDF".

Up front: this was written by the people who made the EZPZ editor, which is on the list below. So the criteria come before the ranking and we spell out what ours cannot do. What each tool can do comes from that tool’s own documentation; whether the file gets uploaded, we measured ourselves.

Overlaying versus editing

A PDF contains instructions like "draw 2026 in this font at x 220, y 540". There are no paragraphs and no tables. To change a character you have to find that instruction and rewrite it, which is awkward.

Many tools take the easier road: leave the original alone, cover it with a white box, and put new text on top. It looks similar on screen, but select the text and the old characters come with it, and a search still finds the old words.

PDF24 says so in its own help pages: editing the text in a PDF "is not an easy thing to do, because the PDF format is not a good format for editing the page contents and the text afterwards". It then suggests converting to Word first. That is an honest answer.

What we measure

The first two you can repeat yourself in a minute. That is how the table below was filled in.

The ranking: changes the original text, without uploading the file

That is the axis. Rank on "can it edit text at all" and the order changes, so read it with the table below.

1. EZPZ editor

• What it is: click the original text and change it in place. The file never leaves the browser. No account, no caps, no watermark.
• Choose it when: fixing a few figures or dates in a contract or a quote, the kind of document you would rather not upload anywhere.
• Not for: scanned documents; the page is a picture, so there is no text to change. It does not reflow paragraphs and cannot add rows to a table. Large documents are heavy on a phone.

2. PDFgear desktop

• What it is: a free installed application. It changes the original text and everything stays on your computer.
• Choose it when: you do not mind installing something and there is a lot to do. The feature range is wide.
• Not for: it needs installing. And the same company’s online editor, which does run inside the browser, leaves the feature out: "direct text editing not supported", in its own words.

3. LibreOffice Draw

• What it is: the drawing application in the free office suite. It opens a PDF and lets you change the text.
• Choose it when: it is already installed. Free, and nothing leaves your machine.
• Not for: the official documentation is candid about the limits. A PDF opens as a graphical document, so text arrives as snippets rather than flowing paragraphs, and "in most cases this only makes sense if only single words or letters are to be exchanged". Layout often shifts.

4. Sejda

• What it is: the most complete real text editing on the web in this list.
• Choose it when: you need it to work properly in a browser and you do not mind the file being uploaded.
• Not for: the moment you pick a file it goes up; the upload request is right there in the Network tab. Free is 3 tasks per hour, 50 MB and 50 pages, and processed files are deleted after 2 hours.

5. iLovePDF

• What it is: real text editing arrived in February 2026, including font, size and colour.
• Choose it when: you already use it alongside its other tools.
• Not for: the file is uploaded; its FAQ states files are kept for a maximum of 2 hours and then removed. 100 MB per file, and the number of free daily operations is not published.

A lot of comparison articles still list iLovePDF as unable to edit text. They predate February 2026. Pieces like this have a shelf life, including this one, which is why the date we checked is on it.

6. PDF Candy

• What it is: states it can change the original text, including replacing or deleting whole paragraphs.
• Choose it when: you want free web editing and the file is under 50 MB.
• Not for: uploaded and kept for 2 hours. Its own blog notes scanned and password-protected files will not work. The free tier has hourly restrictions, though the number is not published.

7. PDF24 Tools

• What it is: a generous free toolbox with no account. Merging, splitting and compressing are unrestricted.
• Choose it when: the job is anything other than text.
• Not for: there is no original-text editing. The editor writes on the page, inserts images and shapes. Files go to its servers in Germany and are deleted after one hour.

8. Smallpdf and Adobe Acrobat online

• What they are: both well known, both well built, and in both cases editing the original text is a paid feature.
• Choose them when: you already subscribe.
• Not for: Smallpdf states that "direct PDF text editing requires a Pro subscription". Adobe is blunter: the free version of its online editor "does not let you edit existing body text within a PDF". Free gets you text boxes, comments and highlights on top, and you must sign in to download.

What the table says

Read down the columns and a pattern appears. Every web tool that changes the original text uploads your file. Every web tool that does not upload cannot change the original text. PDFgear makes the point neatly by doing one of each: the desktop app edits, the browser version does not.

Doing both means reading, editing and rewriting the PDF entirely inside the browser. Server-side is far easier to build, which is why almost everyone builds it that way. We took the harder route because the documents that most need a small fix are usually the ones you least want to upload.

About the one we made

The EZPZ editor changes the original text in place and the file never leaves the browser. If you want to be sure, open a file and then disconnect from the internet: editing and saving carry on.

The limits are just as clear. Scanned documents cannot be edited. Paragraphs do not reflow, so you break lines yourself, and rows cannot be added to a table. Adding characters the original font does not contain means embedding a font, which makes the file bigger. Large documents are heavy on a phone.

If the document needs rebuilding, converting to Word is better. If there is a great deal to do, an installed application is better. For a few fixes without sending the file anywhere, this is where it fits.
