How to convert table data

  1. 1

    Choose a file

XLSX, XLS, CSV and ODS work. The sheet list and the first few rows appear as a preview.

  2. 2

    Pick sheets and a format

Leave only the sheets you want, then choose what to export as.

  3. 3

    Download

Selecting several sheets produces one file per sheet.

Worth knowing about each format

The CSV encoding problem

Excel tries to open CSV using the system default encoding, which is why UTF-8 files so often come out as garbage.

So the CSV produced here carries a BOM, which tells Excel it is UTF-8 and gets it opened correctly. Other programs read it fine too.

Coming the other way, legacy systems still emit CSV in EUC-KR, Shift_JIS, GB18030, Big5 and other codepages. The encoding is detected automatically, and you can override it by hand if the guess is wrong.

JSON uses the first row as column names

The first row is treated as the column names and the rest become an array of objects, a shape you can feed to an API or use directly in code.

If your first row is data, the column names come out odd; add a header row in Excel before converting.

Common questions

What happens to formulas?+

The calculated values come across, not the formulas. That is usually what you want.

Are cell formats and colours kept?+

No. CSV and JSON hold values only, and formatting is dropped even when exporting to XLSX. This tool moves data.

What if there are several sheets?+

One file per selected sheet, with the sheet name appended to the file name.

Can it handle a very large file?+

Tens of thousands of rows are generally fine. The whole file is held in memory, though, so open anything in the tens of megabytes on a computer.
