Rotate a scanned PDF permanently, page by page

Some pages of your scan came out sideways or upside down. Rotating in the viewer looks fine until you close it. Here is how to turn only the wrong pages and save it for good, before it goes to a portal or an email.

How-to

Two ways this usually happens. You fed a stack into the office copier and duplex scanning turned the backs upside down. Or you scanned your marksheet, caste certificate or passport page with a phone app, and one page came out sideways. Reading it means turning your head, and on an application portal it can look unclear to the person checking it.

Duplex scanning is the usual cause: the back of each sheet arrives rotated 180 degrees.

Rotating in a viewer does not save

The most common trap. The rotate button in most PDF viewers changes the view, not the file. Close and reopen and it is back, and the person you send it to sees the original. Many office users find the free Acrobat Reader will rotate the view but not let them save the turned pages, which is exactly this.

Rotate in viewer
Only the view changes
They still see it sideways
The file itself has to change.
The EZPZ File PDF rotation tool, with a drop area in the middle of the page.
Check each page and turn it in 90-degree steps.

Rotate PDF pages and save

Which way to turn

How it looks nowTurn
Upside down180 degrees
Text runs up the page (heads to the left)90 degrees clockwise
Text runs down the page (heads to the right)90 degrees anticlockwise

When in doubt: turn until the tops of the letters point up.

Rotate only the pages that are wrong

In Rotate PDF, click the preview of the sideways or upside-down page and press a direction button; only that page turns. Select several and they turn together. If you select nothing, the turn applies to every page, so for a mostly correct document always select first. The previews turn live, so you can see the result before you save, and the saved file is upright in any program.

If the order is wrong too

Duplex scanning scrambles order as well as orientation. Scanning all the fronts and then all the backs produces 1, 3, 5 … 2, 4, 6.

Reorder PDF pages

Fix the order first, then the rotation. Reordering while you rotate makes it easy to lose track of which pages you have already done.

Check before you upload to a portal

Exam, university and visa portals show what is in the file, not what your viewer showed you. So after saving, close everything and open the saved copy once more. If a page is still sideways, the rotation was applied to the view, or you picked the original file at the upload step.

  • Open the downloaded file, not the original, and scroll through every page.
  • Check the file name you pick at the portal's upload button matches the rotated copy.
  • If the portal also has a size limit, rotate first and compress afterwards; rotation itself does not change the size.
  • If several scans have to go as one PDF, rotate, then merge, then check once more. Our guide to turning several scans into a single PDF covers the order.

Our guide to turning several scans into a single PDF and our guide to removing or reordering PDF pages cover the next steps.

Reviewers can reject documents they cannot read clearly, so a quick check costs less than a re-submission. For the exact document rules of your exam or visa, follow its own notice.

Avoiding it next time

  • Turn on auto-orientation in the scanner settings if it is offered. It reads the text and squares the page up.
  • Duplex scanning has "flip on short edge" and "flip on long edge" settings. If the backs come out inverted, switch it.
  • Scan a few sheets and check before feeding the whole stack.

Common questions

Why does my PDF rotate back after saving?
The rotation was only applied to the view in your PDF viewer, or you reopened the original instead of the saved copy. A tool that rewrites the page rotation inside the file makes it stick for everyone.
Can I rotate only one page?
Yes. Select just that page's preview and press a direction button. Only that page turns.
How do I rotate a PDF on my phone?
Many phone scanner apps let you rotate a page before saving the PDF, which is easiest. For a PDF you already have, Rotate PDF is a web page with nothing to install, so the same steps apply in the phone browser. Check the saved copy afterwards.
Does rotating reduce quality?
No. Rotation in 90-degree steps only changes orientation data.
Can I fix a page that is slightly tilted?
Not with 90-degree rotation. Rescanning is quicker than trying.
