Extract ZIP, 7z and RAR

Open a ZIP, 7z or RAR online, right in your browser, see what is inside, and pull out only the files you need. It works on a Chromebook or an iPhone too, with nothing to install, no trial countdown and nothing uploaded.

Files are opened inside this browser only. Nothing is sent anywhere.

How to extract an archive

  1. 1

    Choose an archive

ZIP, 7z, RAR, tar, gz, xz and bz2. The list of files inside and their sizes appear straight away.

  2. 2

    Pick what to extract

If you do not need everything, select only what you want.

  3. 3

    Download

The selected files appear in the results. Tick the box to repack them into a single new ZIP instead.

When this earns its keep

A computer where you cannot install anything

Office and government machines often will not let you install an archive tool. Windows and macOS open ZIP natively but not 7z or RAR, and even with a ZIP, when you only want to look inside, doing it in the browser is quicker.

More importantly, the file is never uploaded, so you avoid handing an archive of unknown contents to an online service.

Mangled file names get repaired

The built-in compression on Korean and Japanese Windows does not store file names as UTF-8, so they come out as gibberish elsewhere. The encoding is detected and the original names restored.

Select the few files you need and use "repack as a new ZIP" and you skip extracting everything just to compress it again.

See the list before you extract anything

As soon as you choose an archive, the names, folders and sizes of everything inside appear. Nothing is written to your disk until you save a file, so you can look inside a RAR without extracting it at all.

That is worth doing with archives from people you do not know. An .exe, .scr or .js file among what should be documents or photos is your cue to stop and open nothing.

On a Chromebook or an iPhone

A Chromebook cannot run WinRAR or 7-Zip, and one managed by a school or employer may block extra apps as well. On an iPhone, the Files app unzips a ZIP when you tap it, but not a RAR or 7z. Both have a browser, and that is all this page needs.

On a Chromebook, open this page in Chrome and choose the archive from the Files app. On an iPhone, open it in Safari and pick the archive from Files; the files you save land back in Files, in the Downloads folder.

Phones and Chromebooks have less memory to spare, so archives of around 1 GB and up may fail there. Open those on a computer.

No trial, no pop-up asking you to buy

WinRAR is paid software with a trial period. Once the trial is over it still opens archives, but it keeps showing a window asking you to buy a licence.

This page has no trial, no licence reminder and no account to create. If you would rather install something, 7-Zip is free as well.

Split archives (.part1.rar, .z01, .001) are not supported

Big downloads are often cut into numbered pieces: name.part1.rar, name.part2.rar and so on, a .z01, .z02 set that ends in .zip, or name.7z.001, name.7z.002. This page opens one file at a time and cannot join the pieces.

For those, use an extractor installed on a computer, such as 7-Zip, WinRAR or The Unarchiver. Put every part in the same folder, keep the names as they were downloaded, and open only the first part (part1 or .001; for a .z01 set, the .zip). The extractor reads the other parts in order by itself. If one part is missing or did not finish downloading, extraction stops with an error.

Common questions

Can I open RAR online without installing anything?+

Yes. Choose the .rar file on this page. Its file list and sizes appear in your browser, and you save only the files you need, without installing WinRAR or 7-Zip. Nothing is uploaded.

Can I see what is inside a RAR without extracting it?+

Yes. The list of files, folders and sizes appears first, and nothing is saved until you choose files and save them.

Does it work on a Chromebook?+

Yes. Open this page in Chrome, choose the archive from the Files app and save the files you want. There is nothing to install. Archives of around 1 GB and up can run out of memory on a Chromebook.

Can I open a RAR on an iPhone?+

Yes, in Safari. Pick the .rar from the Files app, and the files you save go to Files, in the Downloads folder. Stick to smaller archives on a phone.

Is there a trial or a pop-up asking me to pay?+

No. Unlike WinRAR, there is no trial period, no licence reminder and no sign-up.

Does it open split archives like .part1.rar, .z01 or .001?+

No. It opens one file at a time and cannot join the parts. Put all the parts in one folder on a computer, keep their names, and open the first one (part1 or .001) with an installed extractor such as 7-Zip or WinRAR.

What about 7z and RAR?+

Both work now, and so do tar, gz, xz and bz2. The first one you open downloads a 1.5MB extraction engine. ZIP does not need it and opens straight away.

Password-protected ZIP?+

Yes. Enter the password when asked and the archive is extracted right here in your browser. The password is not sent anywhere.

What happens to the folder structure?+

The list shows the full paths. Downloading individual files leaves only the file name, a browser limitation. Use "repack as a new ZIP" to keep the structure.

Can it handle a large archive?+

Extraction happens in memory, so a big file is demanding. Open anything in the hundreds of megabytes on a computer, and when it has room to spare.
