We built an editor for AI files you get without Illustrator
A designer sends you a logo as an .ai file. You only need to change one phone number, but there is no Illustrator on your computer. For that moment we built an editor that opens AI files in the browser with their layers intact and saves them back as AI.
An .ai file is Illustrator's working file. Logos, posters and business cards, anything that has to stay sharp at any size, usually travel in this format. Paths, text and layers stay separate inside it, so the person who receives it can edit it directly. The trouble starts when that person has no Illustrator. Windows has no built-in program for .ai files, and when another program does open one, it often shows a single flat picture you cannot edit.
Your options without Illustrator
| Option | Good | Catch |
|---|---|---|
| Illustrator subscription | The original program, so it looks exactly right | A monthly fee for one small fix |
| Illustrator 7-day free trial | Works right away | Billing starts when the trial ends |
| No cost | Work computers often block installs, and they do not save back to AI | |
| Browser tools | Just open a link | Some upload your file to a server, and some open AI but cannot save it |
What we built belongs on the last line, but it needs no install or account, uploads nothing, and saves your edits back as AI.
EZPZ Vector Editor
Open the Vector Editor and drag your .ai onto it. That is all. It is the open-source vector editor VectorCraft (MIT and Apache-2.0, by the ArtCraft team), rebuilt with a light theme, a new Korean interface and a hookup to this site. The menus and shortcuts follow Illustrator.

What it can do
- Layers and sublayers, groups, clipping masks, colors and gradients, transparency and artboards come in as they were.
- AI files saved without PDF compatibility, and old ones from Illustrator 3 to 8, open from their editing data. Other programs show only a "saved without PDF content" notice for these files.
- You get the Selection (V), Direct Selection (A), Pen (P) and Type (T) tools, Pathfinder, the Shape Builder and Image Trace, with unlimited undo.
- Under "File › Save As" (Ctrl+Shift+S) you save as AI (PDF-compatible), SVG or PDF. Under "File › Export › Export As" you export PNG, JPG or WebP.
- Besides AI, it opens SVG, EPS, PDF, DXF, EMF and WMF, and Affinity files.
How an edit goes
Where your file goes
The editor itself downloads into your browser, and opening, editing and saving all happen there. There is no step that sends your file to a server, which matters most with an unreleased logo or a client's draft. Keep the Network tab of your browser's developer tools open while you open a file and you will see that no request anywhere near the size of your file goes out.
What it cannot do yet
- It does not have everything Illustrator has. By VectorCraft's own estimate it covers roughly 70% of Illustrator's features. Live effects, symbols, pattern fills and brushes can come in as their drawn look rather than as objects you can edit.
- A web page cannot read the fonts installed on your computer. If the file uses a font the editor does not have, the text is drawn in a similar font.
- Saving as AI writes a PDF-compatible file. Illustrator opens it, but it does not carry Illustrator's own editing data.
- A very large file can stall the browser tab.
- The first visit downloads about 15 MB of editor files. After that it opens quickly.
- It runs in computer and tablet browsers. Phones are too small, so we block them.
Illustrator is a trademark of Adobe, and this editor has no connection to Adobe. Its menus and shortcuts simply follow Illustrator.
We also ranked other tools for editing AI files, and wrote up what to check when an AI file will not open.
Questions
- Can I open an AI file without Illustrator?
- Yes. Open the EZPZ Vector Editor in your browser and drag the file in. There is nothing to install and no account.
- Can I send the edited file back to the designer as AI?
- Choose AI under "File › Save As" and you get a PDF-compatible .ai file, which Illustrator can open too. If the file has complex effects, open it once more before you send it.
- The fonts look different.
- A web editor cannot read the fonts installed on your computer, so when a font used in the file is missing, a similar one is drawn instead. If the exact fonts matter, ask the sender for a copy with the text turned into outlines ("Create Outlines").
- Is my file uploaded to a server?
- No. Everything from opening to saving happens in your browser, and the file stays on your device.
- Does it work on phones?
- No. With this many panels it is blocked on phones. Open it in a computer or tablet browser.
